Implementation Period

01/11/2023 – 31/10/2025

Project Number

2023-1-DE02-KA220-ADU-000153716

Summary of the project

ManUp4Her is an Erasmus Plus initiative aimed at addressing gender-based violence (GBV) through adult education. With an implementation period starting from November 1st, 2023, spanning 24 months until October 31st, 2025, the project underscores men’s pivotal role in fostering social cohesion and combating GBV. By fostering empathy, enhancing social competencies, and nurturing an understanding of gender diversity among men, ManUp4Her pioneer innovative approaches to prevent and ultimately eliminate GBV. Employing the andragogy and heutagogy learning methodologies, the project tailors its strategies to adult learners, recognizing the importance of lifelong education in societal change. At its core, ManUp4Her responds to the imperative of ensuring women’s safety and freedom from gender-based violence, by engaging men as active agents of change. Through targeted interventions, the project aims to cultivate a culture of gender equality, thereby addressing two key priorities outlined in the Erasmus+ 2023 guide: developing men’s awareness of EU values regarding GBV and creating high-quality learning materials for male adults to foster personal growth in terms of gender equality.

TARGET GROUPS

Main target group:

  • Adult Men

Indirect Target Group

  • Participating Organisations’ Staff

PROJECT’S OBJECTIVES

The objectives of the project are:

  • to develop men’s social skills in the form of empathy, so that they understand the urgent need to eliminate gender-based violence. This will foster a mindset consistent with EU values.
  • to understand gender diversity. By highlighting the different experiences that women have, simply because of their gender, men will better understand the differences between the sexes.
  • to strengthen men’s participation in society in order to contribute to social cohesion. The project aims to highlight the need for men’s participation in this struggle which will lead to the creation of a common cause for gender equality.
  • to create quality educational material for adult men on gender-based violence. This will encourage men to understand the importance of continuing learning and developing personal and professional skills even after completing formal education.
  • to enhance interdisciplinary cooperation between the participating organisations. Through this cooperation at EU level, the partners intend to improve their capacity to create international and interdisciplinary synergies.
  • to develop the visibility of the project and multiply its impact, key messages and results.

Project Results

This interactive e-book will be the educational material that will introduce men to the issue of gender-based violence. It will consist of 5 chapters:

  • “Gender-Based Violence 101”
  • ”This doesn’t count!” – Types of GBV
  • “So it’s not about the mini skirt?” – Causes of GBV
  • “And so what?” – Impact of GBV
  • “The guy next door” Environments where GBV occurs

The e-book, will focus on presenting the topic as a theory, but will also include relevant statistics and incidents by country and in the EU. The format of the interactive book will be text for the theoretical parts and illustrations for the statistics. It will be 50 pages long.

The second result will be a series of podcast episodes. These episodes will narrate the key points of the ebook allowing for a more summarised version that is easily accessible. Specifically:
a)Key facts about GBV
b)Causes and Consequences of GBV
c)Types and Environments of GBV
d)Case studies
e)Facts and Stats
The podcast episodes will be available in the national languages of the partner countries because an English podcast with translated transcriptions would defeat the purpose of listening without having to read the material. It will also be available in English to allow other country nationals to access the material. It will be distributed via a podcast service and redistributed through the project website.

The videos will be created in ways that ensure optimal engagement and effective learning outcomes. They will focus on two topics: 1. Recognition of GBV & 2.Prevention of GBV.

The videos will also include: Signalling: The partnership will use on-screen text or symbols to highlight important information. Segmenting: The videos will pause and ask questions, providing theory before moving on, allowing learners to engage with small pieces of information and giving them control over the flow. Weeding: There will be limited music to eliminate extraneous information and allow the viewers to focus on the key message. Matching modality: The videos will be shot in high-quality studios with professional actors allowing the partners to use both the audio and visual channels to convey the information. They will be recorded in English with subtitles in all the partner languages. Closed Captions in English will also be available.

The vlog series with expert interviews will include tips and suggestions for the recognition and prevention of GBV. They will follow principles for educational vlogs in order to appeal to the viewers while also conveying important information.
Indicatively:
-Natural: The vlogs will be recorded in each expert’s native language to allow them to speak freely and more naturally creating a friendly and inviting atmosphere
-Simple: Seeing as the vlog interviewees will be experts, the interviewing partner will make sure that the language used is easy to understand by asking the experts more questions if necessary.

An online guide for men (approx 15 pages) with basic theory and examples to become multipliers of the project’s key messages. It will explain the role and significance of the Male Ambassador as well as tips and examples for men to share
the knowledge they gained from the previous results. It will also contain short self-regulated exercises to test their skills as multipliers.
